Valerian root is most effective after you take it regularly for two or more weeks. For sleep disorders such as insomnia, valerian supplements should be taken 30 minutes to two hours before bedtime.
Though one of the key ingredients of Better Rest, Valerian root often does not have an immediate effect and therefor is generally not considered to be a single-dose medication. While no studies have been done to confirm the exact cumulative effect of Valerian, this fact indicates that the herb stays in the body and its effects are cumulative based on continued usage. Valerian root supplements are most effective after taking them regularly for at least 2 weeks, and to get the full benefits of valerian root, you should use them for several weeks or months. Other ingredients such as melatonin are faster acting, but to get the full benefit of our natural sleep aid Better Rest, it is ideal to use for several weeks or months.
While the effects of Valerian build over time, it is best not to take valerian root unless you intend to fall asleep shortly after taking it. Different people with different body chemistry will not react exactly the same, whether taking prescription medications or natural supplements. Your doctor may recommend a higher dosage such as 400 to 900 milligrams of Valerian to help with insomnia but this dosage is not recommended for longer than 4 weeks. However, Better Rest contains a more appropriate level of 150 milligrams of Valerian root for longer usage, which will enable you to continue getting a good night's sleep over time while reducing the incidents of side effects.
